4 Vegan Smore Recipes
It’s summer here in New York, which means camping season is in full effect. For some, that means packing up the kids and heading outside the city limits but there are still a bunch of places to go camping within the city limits. In my opinion camping season is shorthand for eat-all-the-smores- you-can stuff-your-face-with season in my book. Smores are like pieces of magic you hold in your hands, but even they can get to be a little redundant so I’ve scoured the globe to find ways to reinvent the classic smore recipe. I prefer vegan smores recipes because the thing that makes most smores not vegan is Gelatin, which is a pig/horse bi-product and we’re not a fan of eating farm animals over here. So here, are four vegan smores recipes to spice up your summer, and guarantee full season of s’more eating.
Traditional Vegan Smores
Classic S’mores are traditional summer fare in North America, made of fire-roasted marshmallows sandwiched between two graham crackers with a square of chocolate that melts on contact with the cooling marshmallow goodness. What makes most graham crackers non-vegan is the presence of honey, if this doesn’t bother you, any graham crackers will do.
Ingredients
- Vegan Marshmallows | I’ve tried both these, and these, they both work well for smores
- Graham crackers | these are accidentally vegan, this vegan option is also gluten-free made with smores in mind
- Chocolate
Classic S’mores Vegan Recipe
- break graham crackers to the desired size and arrange on a plate
- put a square of chocolate on one graham cracker
- impale marshmallow with a stick and toast marshmallow over an open flame to desired toastiness ( I personally like to let my marshmallows catch fire then allow the fire to burn out on it’s own leaving me with a crispy outer layer and melty goodness inside)
- Place still warm marshmallow on top of the square of chocolate and use the chocolate-free piece of your graham cracker to smoosh the marshmallow flat and secure the sandwich as you remove the stick
Hold the Graham Crackers Vegan Smores
This vegan smores recipe is one of my favorites because I can lie to myself and say its healthy. By removing the graham cracker s completely its also a naturally gluten-free option for smores
Ingredients
- Banana
- Chocolate (chocolate chips or a chocolate bar broken into pieces)
- Mini Marshmallows (if you can’t find mini marshmallows cut tear apart large marshmallows for the same effect)
- Aluminum Foil
Banana smores recipe
- Slice a banana open lengthwise, carefully so as not to cut through to the bottom of the banana
- Using a fork, slightly mash the banana inside of its skin
- Fill with toppings by tucking in chunks of chocolate and marshmallow by evenly stuff them in the banana.
- Wrap the banana tightly in tin foil and put them into the embers in your campfire, or the grey coals of your grill
- Depending on the heat of the fire, let them roast for about 5 – 10 minutes flipping halfway through to ensure maximum melty goodness
Smores for Breakfast Vegan Smore Recipe
If you can’t have smores for breakfast while camping, when can you ever have smores for breakfast? This vegan smores recipe makes for a really special morning treat for the whole family. By substituting graham crackers for waffles you bring this night time treat into the daylight.
Ingredients
- Waffles| any kind will do, for no-fuss option, I like these waffle cookies
- Marshmallows
- Chocolate Spread | You can use a regular chocolate bar, but I like the manageability of a spread. The addition of Almonds and chia seeds in this spread makes it super easy to convince yourself this is a healthy breakfast option.
Vegan waffle Smore recipe
- Prepare the waffles as directed, you can bake yours in the oven before leaving for camp or toast on the grill.
- Toast your marshmallows over the open flame and place between two waffles and proceed to eat as you would do smores
- Position waffles on a baking sheet. Place two marshmallows on each Eggo Waffler. Bake in a 450-degree oven until marshmallows are melted and lightly browned.
Smores in a Cone Recipe
Known as Campfire Cones these sweet treats are a less messy alternative to traditional smores. Say goodbye to biting into smores only to have the ooey gooey marshmallow filling pop out the back end. This vegan smores recipe is a sure fire way to keep your summer mess to a minimum.
Ingredients
- Sugar Cones
- Almond Butter ( Peanut Butter will work just as well I just don’t eat it)
- Mini Marshmallows
- Chocolate Chips
- Bananas
- Aluminum Foil
- Crunch | Walnuts, Almonds, roasted chickpeas, hemp seeds
- Fruit | Shredded coconut, strawberries, bananas, apples
Campfire Cone Smores Recipe
- Wrap the cone in the foil before filling with toppings, be sure to leave the top of the wrapping open
- If using nut butter, coat the inside of the cone with your choice of spread
- Fill your cone with the toppings of your choice
- Fold over the open top of your aluminum foil and seal cone satchel
- Place on heat source away from direct flame. Either directly on grey coals or in a charcoal grill for 5-7 minutes
- Remove from heat and enjoy. Kids might prefer to dive in face first but I prefer to use a spoon
