A Color Story | Curating Capsule Clothing
I’ve always liked the idea of capsule collections yet couldn’t get on board with them due to their commitment to being Normcore Porn. Every single example told me I needed the perfect T-shirt and black denim skinny jeans. In an effort to combat the need to join the buying frenzies that the holiday season kicks off I decided to compile a list of my core outfit staples. Low and behold my clothing chart began to form a capsule collection of sorts.
I am a maximalist’s dream of minimalism. I want to live in a yurt by a ravine, with a trapdoor that leads to my high tech storage vault of clothing. I essentially want o to be one with nature and stunt on butterflies, I know I’m a mess. The one thing that has gotten me closer to being less of a mess is limiting my wardrobe to a color story.
Another reason I limit my wardrobe to a color story is because my style has multiple personalities, I’m either Frans Dreshser or Anne of Greene Gables, there is no in-between. Limiting my wardrobe to a certain color palate has made it so pieces that you wouldn’t normally think, can work double duty.
Step 1: Select Your Base Color(s)
Having a base color, or a color palette in my case helps to limit what you end up purchasing. Having a limited color palate naturally limits how many things you can buy, which limits the amount of waste you can create exponentially.
I wear what makes my skin feel tan and brown and kissed by the summer sun. For me, those colors not only make me feel better but look better as well.
Step 2: Select your silhouette(s)
Don’t be distracted by whatever new fad is in this season, off the rack clothing is made to flatter every body type so knowing what you’re going to
As a prepubescent girl, I became obsessed with corsets. The cinching and pulling to modify one’s physical form into the perfect feminine physique filled many of my waking hours. Puberty came and went and the curves never did come so I became a student of the ’60s and dreamt up the most caftany caftans that ever were.
Clothing pieces in my capsule wardrobe either create the illusion of hips or bury my physique in so much fabric one can only guess at whether or not I even have a waist at all.
Step 3: Define your Essentials
For most people, their style isn’t going to change much but what stores have for sale will, so identifying the clothing essentials of your capsule wardrobe is important.
I find that most capsule wardrobe guides talk about “the perfect white tee” my capsule wardrobe is devoid of anything resembling a tee shirt. they don’t work for what I like to wear so they aren’t my essentials. mid-drift grazing tops are essentials, so my style all year round so when I find the perfect one, I stock up.
Step 4: Choose Your Accent Color
Yellow brings me joy, having it around me brings a spark to my day even when all else seems dreary. So I often carry it with me and on me. People always ask me if I always wear yellow and it surprises me because I don’t actually own many yellow pieces. It’s really hard to find the perfect saffron garment that compliments my skin so I don’t actually wear it that often. However, my life, like my wardrobe is filled with accents of the color.
Step 5: Add A Few Patterned Items
I’m in the camp that believes animal print is a neutral. however, that may not be your cup of tea. Either way, mixing in prints and patterns that are in line with your capsule clothing color story.
Step 6: Layer Capsule Clothing as needed
Your Capsule wardrobe should be filled with pieces of clothing that make you happy so don’t allow the change of season to have you completely abandon your style. Layer clothing in your capsule wardrobe with pieces that compliment your existing wardrobe.
I’ve been known to wear crop tops in blizzards, I essentially wear the same thing all year long, in the winter I just wear them over one another.
