Micro locks| What I learned from my DIY Sisterlocks installation & How to start

I’ve never had a perm, my mother never let me. I grew up dedicating weekends to the maintenance of my hair. In highschool finally able to decide the styles I wanted myself, I opted to get my hair braided in box braids devoid of synthetic hair. I’d painstakingly redo the front two rows whenever they showed the slightest bit of frizz.

I dated a boy in high school whose mom was a sisterlock consultant, she was the first person I ever met with sisterlocks. She informed me that it would save a heap of time if I started sisterlocks this way, I was so close to scheduling an installation. Over the next 5 years, I tried every other hairstyle in the book, including cutting off my hair twice for a cheaper sisterlock installation price. I tried in earnest to convince my conservative Jamaican family that locks were a good idea for me to no avail.

Then I booked a one-way ticket to Australia. I spent a week setting up my grid and starting my DIY sisterlocks.

What are Sisterlocks

Sisterlocks are thin locs that are about half the size of traditional locs. They are created using a trademarked locking technique that does not require the use of any hair care products,” Sisterlocs are a patented hairstyle

Micro locks vs Sisterlocks

There are many methods for starting micro locks, such as interlocking, braiding or twisting. On rare occasions, micro locks, are started with comb coils but it is not common. Sisterlocks use the interlocking method to start micro locks on the aforementioned patented grid system. Interlocking is great for fine-textured hair or for those that desire the smallest version of micro locks. Most certified locations charge to interlock your hair by the inch so an install can run thousands of dollars. I started my micro locks with braids because my hair was long and my pockets were short. Starting micro locks from braids is common when you have a long length of hair at installation or your hair texture is fine and twists will not hold.

Benefits of Micro Locks

  • Versatility|  The small size of micro locks often creates hundreds of locs, which means that the styling possibilities are almost endless.
  • Neatness | compared to retwisting micro locks maintained with interlocking will stay neater for an extended amount of time. Because each individual section is smaller, there is less frizz at the roots.
  • Fullness |micro lock generally results in at least 150-300 locs, depending on the size of your head and what the desired size of your micro locks are. I have over 500 ( they say its bad luck to count them) the more individual locks you have the greater fullness and volume of your locks at rest.
  • Size | Microlocks can be done as small or even smaller than sisterlocks based on the thickness of your hair and your desired look
