Postpartum Care| Breastfeeding Clothing

Postpartum my body changed a great deal sizing me out of not only my wardrobe but straight sizing. I gained so much weight during my pregnancy that my body type changed drastically making it hard to feel good in the clothing that did still fit. I felt bad about wanting a whole new wardrobe but also got so bummed out looking at my clothing that some days I’d just stand in my closet and cry.
First-world problems aside, I became acutely aware that me finding the right breastfeeding clothing was an important part of my postpartum care. I’m ant maternity clothing because they’re only really useful for five months or so, I breastfed for four and a half years with my firstborn so I was comfortable investing in stylish breastfeeding clothing.

What to look for in breastfeeding clothing

Breastfeeding clothing should be easy access

If you normally wear low-cut tops in loose or stretchy material then you’re essentially covered (get it) when it comes to breastfeeding clothing. but if you’re like me and wear high-cut clothing in lots of natural fibers it may a bit harder to find breastfeeding-friendly pieces amongst your own clothing. Look for clothing with high side slits or low arm clothes to give you breastfeeding access. Side access has the added benefit of leaving you less exposed while breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding clothing shouldn’t leave you exposed and should cover your belly

Something I overlooked when it came to breastfeeding clothing the first time around was full coverage. This is counterintuitive at first, but once you realize that when your breastfeeding journey begins every part of your body has been transformed. Your belly needs support and your engorged boobs may need coverage for the first time in your life so having access to just your boobs at a moment’s notice is important. I like to think of high waist compression tights as an integral part of my breastfeeding wardrobe. Think breastfeeding tank tops instead of bras for added support and coverage. When looking for a breastfeeding bra, I like to choose bras that have a triangle insert that frames my breast instead of leaving it fully exposed.

Breastfeeding Dresses

T-shirt Dress | this simple dress is perfect for lounging around the house or heading out of the house. A classic silhouette that can be dressed up or down this dress can be worn far past breastfeeding days

Slip dress | this asymmetrical bias cut midi dress comes in stunning mustard as well as a neutral animal print. Also kind of obsessed with this halterneck midi that comes in the dreamiest hues and seems like the perfect summer dress in its no-fuss no wrinkle fabrication

Breastfeeding Tops

I feel like finding the perfect breastfeeding top is a real-life struggle, personally, I want the breastfeeding access in my tops to look like a thoughtful design, not a functional afterthought. I shy away from anything with snaps, buttons, or zippers that can irritate the baby’s skin or come between or snuggles.

Loose Tops | Hands down one of my favorite breastfeeding tops. I love a good tunic length breastfeeding top, this one is the most gorgeous warm brown color

Full Coverage Breastfeeding buttondown | This shirt uses the cutest panel access to keep you fully covered yet still offers adequate breastfeeding access

Fitted tops | this long sleeve number in the most luxurious camel color or this short sleeve top that is made for military moms so they come in desert influenced neutral tones and fit like the perfect t-shirt.

Breastfeeding Sweater | The absolute best sweater is this one that only exposes the boob you need while keeping you toasty. Composed of one hundred percent cotton it’s easy to throw in the wash when it gets soiled. I also love this sweater that is made of thick wool and its ingenious design makes the nursing access just as much fashion as function.

Wool Top | this organic merino wool shirt is like the queen of breastfeeding tops its an elevated take on an essential with super long arms and a soft slub

Breastfeeding Bra

For a full list of the Breastfeeding bras I’m currently wearing, read this but here are a few that I’m loving

Cotton Breastfeeding Bra | This bra looks like I would wear it outside in lieu of a top. This one comes in neutral tones and extended sizes

Wool Breastfeeding bra | This bra has the easiest acmes and is perfect for wearing to sleep or around the house, made of organic merino wool they feel like you’re wearing nothing.

Synthetic breastfeeding bra | Hands down the sexiest breastfeeding bra ever made was one in collaboration with Dita Von Teese, if you can get your hands on a few of those do it! If not this bra evokes just as much sexy as Dita’s iconic bra, and this bra comes in a truffle brown that looks so good against the skin, though I’d prefer if they had all-over support. This lace breastfeeding bras seem like a great layering piece

I hope these pieces of clothing make your breastfeeding journey easier and more stylish
